Frequently Asked Questions
Don't see the answer to your question here? Feel free to click on the LiveChat icon or call us. Our Costa Rica number is (506)
8994 6493
and the US line is 281-201-4900.
Is travel insurance required?
No. That decision and risk is yours entirely. We do recommend it, however. It is cheap and covers much of the unexpected.
Can you accommodate special dietary needs?
Maybe. Generally, we have been able to accommodate, but always ask before finalizing your booking.
Does the surfing guide speak English and Spanish?
Yes. The guides are local Tikos, so Spanish is their native language. They are also English speaking.
Must I book through you, or can I use my Travel Agent?
We're always happy to work with reputable travel agents to help arrange your vacation. Your travel agent still receives his or her commission on flights and any travel insurance (a good idea). Or, you can simply reserve your space directly and receive confirmations and updates directly from us.
What age-groups take your tours?
This is considered an "adventure tour". So, our guests tend to be either young or young-at-heart. Romance and adventure has no age limits!
Are children allowed?
Our minimum age is 13, if accompanied by a parent or guardian. A boat in the Pacific Ocean is not a place for small children. There are no exceptions.
Are there different cabin sizes?
No! All eight cabins are exactly the same size. Small! You won't spend your waking hours in your cabin. Besides the three bunks, there is a bathroom with a shower in each. The covered observation deck, the air conditioned salon and adjacent stern on the main deck is where you will spend most of your time while on-board.
Can we book flights to arrive the morning the tour begins or the evening of the last day?
Probably not. And why be in a hurry to be in a hurry? Our tour bus picks up between 8:00 am and 9:00 am at specified hotels in San Jose and arrives at our dock in Puntarenas at 11:00 am. Even if your airline is on-time, there could be a delay getting through Costa Rican Immigration and Customs. If you miss the bus, you will need to take a taxi ($200!). On the last day, the boat arrives back at the dock around 3:00 pm. The bus will depart for San Jose by 4:00 pm and should arrive two hours later. However, there can be highway delays (not uncommon) that could extend the trip. We strongly suggest you get a hotel room and take a flight the next day.
Is it possible that a tour could be cancelled because not enough people booked it?
Nope. Once you have your confirmation, the tour will take place even if you are the only passenger! Not booking enough passengers is our problem, not yours.
How safe is Costa Rica?
Yes. Costa Rica is the safest country in Central America. Tourism is the primary industry (750,000 travel just to the Puntarenas province every year). The Costa Rican government takes the safety and security of tourists very seriously. The government is a democracy and recently signed the NAFTA treaty, opening up the import and export markets. In 1948, the country disbanded their military as it was no longer needed. The Costa Rica Coast Guard protects the coastal areas from illegal fishing and provides safety inspections of boats operating within their territorial waters. They work with the US Navy which has a carrier task force based less than 100 miles south in Panama.
With all of that said, any country and any city has criminal elements. Costa Rica is no exception. We recommend you use common sense when traveling. Don't wear jewelry and don't flash your money around. Be discreet. If you stay out so late that your are the only one on the street, take a taxi back to your hotel. And be sure the taxi is the color red and has a taxi license and meter. Finally, be aware of your surroundings and don’t think that just because you are on vacation in Costa Rica that you are immune to crime.
